Dear Families,

I hope you had a wonderful Halloween celebration on Thursday!  Many students shared with me their excitement and all the fun they had with their family and friends!  I'm delighted to hear everyone was safe and had a blast!  Thank you to Orin's Mom for sending in this photo to share with our class!

Have you ever wondered how Halloween started?  Check out the video below to learn all about it!

An Inspirational Story of One Boy's Halloween:
Ethan Smallwood a 7 year old from Clarke's Beach, Newfoundland is a big fan of superheroes. This year for Halloween though, he didn’t look to the Avengers or the Justice League for inspiration. Ethan was inspired to dress up as Terry Fox after learning about him at school. This Halloween, he collected donations for the Terry Fox Foundation instead of candy. Amazing!

Watch this inspiring story of this EMPATHETIC boy's journey to help make a difference!

Spirit Day:
Thank you to all the students and staff who participated in our spirit day by dressing up in orange, black, and purple!  It's so great seeing our Nighthawk staff and students showing school spirit!!  Check us out!

Character Recognition Assembly:
On Wednesday at our assembly, we celebrated October's character trait:  Cooperation.  Congratulations to Ashton and Molly for striving towards demonstrating this trait in your thoughts, words, and actions!

You two are 'WORKING TOGETHER TO GET THE JOB DONE!'

Mr. Durance:
What a fantastic sport Mr. Durance is for our school's friendly challenge of raising close to $5,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation.  He agreed and consented to having his beard braids cut off and the remaining beard coloured PINK!  As always, Mr. Durance is all smiles for a good cause!  The school was pretty excited to watch this experience!!

Thank you to Mrs. Johnson for organizing our Terry Fox Run for all these years.  Your hard work and dedication to making Nottawa THE BEST doesn't go unnoticed.

Character Trait:
Can you believe it's already November!?  This month's character trait focuses on:

Courage - "We do the right thing EVEN WHEN IT'S DIFFICULT!"

Accepting challenges outside our comfort zones is something that isn't easy, but when we do, we can become a better version of ourselves and realize our potential has NO BOUNDARIES!  We can learn to accept and conquer challenges that come our way no matter the obstacles that are put upon us!

Take a moment to please watch this inspiring video of a 9 year old boy who faces his greatest challenge in life, but maintains an ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE!!

'Success Criteria' for Learning Skills & Work Habits:
This week, I had students work in small groups to collaborate as a team to come up with their own 'Expectations' and 'Criteria' for what each Learning Skill & Work Habit "Looks Like, Sounds Like, and Feels Like."  We started out with blank charts, but soon got our minds thinking and began brainstorming our ideas!  Check out the progression :)

The purpose of this activity is to explicitly teach my students what each learning skill means and how they can achieve these in their daily life.  Students are learning to set their own goals as well to help them reinforce their strengths and improve their achievement in the areas of:
  • Responsibility
  • Independent Work
  • Collaboration
  • Initiative
  • Organization
  • Self-Regulation

We will be referring to their 'Criteria' that they've established throughout the school year!  I believe in the importance and value of having my students' input and voices heard.  I strongly feel this activity will serve as a purposeful tool in helping the kids put effective work habits into place to achieve their personal best in their academic, social and behavioural learning.

Below are some pictures of students working collaboratively to come up with ideas for each learning skill!  We'll have a closer look at these when I see parents for their child's student-led conference the week of Nov. 18th – 22nd.  I look forward to it!

Writing:
Next week’s writing task will focus on students thinking about and reflecting upon all 6 learning skills and work habits.  What I will have the students do is write their own Progress Report Card and self-assess how they think they’re doing in these areas!  I can't wait to see what they come up with!

For each learning skill, they will write a specific star comment (what they think they’re doing well) and an arrow comment (what they need to improve upon).  I think they're really going to have fun during this process!

This task is a meaningful opportunity for students to set goals for themselves in various other subject areas.  Don’t worry, you will have the chance to see these student made progress reports very closely at the student-led conferences. Your child will be eager to share all their hard work with you!

Math Word Problem:
Students were asked to solve the following problem (see photo below).

They were encouraged to use the 4-Block Problem Solving Method.  Please ask your child how he or she solved this.  Question:  Which hour is closet to 6:25?  Explain your answer using pictures, numbers, and words.

In class, I taught students how to draw a number line to represent their elapsed time between 6:00 - 6:25 and 6:25 - 7:00.  See if they can show this to you at home as well!

Math Assessment:
We have worked very hard in class on our measurement unit for telling time.  I sent home a review sheet Wednesday with practice questions which I highly encourage students to work through over the weekend in preparation for their Time Quiz on Monday.  Thank you parents for your support in helping your child with their study skills.  It's making a difference!

Types of Lines:
Earlier this week, during one of our 'Brain Breakfast' consolidation periods, we had a question which got our minds thinking about different types of lines.  Ask your child prior to showing this video if they can name the 3 types of lines we learned about and what they mean.  (HINT:  parallel - lines that never meet;  perpendicular - lines that meet at 90 degrees; intersecting - form a V).

It's a very catchy song and one the kids enjoyed listening to and watching!

Grade 3 Social Studies Project:
The grade 3's are working in pairs to learn about and research Groups of People in Early Canada.  Refer to photo's below which show you the graphic organizer students are currently using.  They will eventually be asked to create a google slides presentation to consolidate their learning and present their findings to their classmates.  It will be a wonderful opportunity for everyone to learn from each other!

Ask your child what group of people they're reading and collecting information about :)  He or she is encouraged to also gather information at home to contribute to their project.  Thanks for your support in this!

Check out the grade 3's as they diligently work hard on their first major project of the school year!

Grade 4 Social Studies Project:
Meanwhile, my grade 4's are learning about Canada's Provinces & Territories.  They too have been assigned a project where they have chosen a province or territory and are beginning to research it.

I have provided readings to help guide them, but like the grade 3's, students will be encouraged to work on this assignment at home too using online sources.  They will have a choice to complete it using google slides or on bristol board.

Ask your child what his or her province or territory is that they're going to research and learn about!  Many were keen and excited as they have connections to their chosen topic!  Below Connor is sharing about his trip out East to Nova Scotia.

I have printed out copies of their assignment.  Students may wish to bring it home with them, but are asked to always return it back to school to use class time as well :)  Thank you for your support in this project endeavour!

Dr. Seuss Field Trip:
We will be heading to Mississauga on Tues. Nov. 5th to visit the Dr. Seuss Exhibition!  Thank you to all families who've consented and paid on School Cash Online.  It's going to be an exciting day :)

We will be departing school at 9:00 A.M. and returning approximately 4:00 P.M.  Please arrange for  your child to be picked up at our school by then.  Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause for your evening endeavours.

If you haven't already done so, a gentle reminder to please speak with your child about the importance of their behaviour being safe, kind, and respectful for this upcoming trip.  Parent volunteers will expect and appreciate this.  I cannot stress enough how vital it is going to be to remain with our groups at all times as it's a big venue with lots to see.  I have every confidence we can do it!

Mindfulness:
What does being PRESENT mean?  When we are in the moment, we can achieve so many wonderful things!  You will be amazed at the difference it makes in your mental, emotional, and physical well-being.  Give it a TRY!  Be mindful.  EVERYDAY!

Growth Mindset:
