Dear Families,

We have completed our second week of school already?!  Time flies when you’re having fun!  The energy of our staff and students continues to be keen and enthusiastic!

Thank you to those families who have taken the time to check out my last post.  I received positive feedback from parents and students.  I will continue to provide you all with updates and highlights each week!

Just a friendly reminder, my blog is accessible through our Nottawa School Website: http://not.scdsb.on.ca/classes

Click on Grade 3/4 Pareen Gill and it will direct you to my blog.  I hope this helps.  Happy reading!

Brain Breakfast:
Each week, I provide students with math warm-up activities called "Brain Breakfast" which link directly with the math expectations.  When students arrive to class in the morning, they quietly get out their folders and complete 5 assigned questions.  This gets our brain alert and ready for the day's math lesson.

We always consolidate (reflect and share our thinking) as a class afterwards to check for understanding.  I provide specific feedback and strategies for them to 'bump up their work' (refer to 'How Am I Doing picture') to make it a level 3 and 4.  Through this process, I gain valuable information to see students' progress with their stars - "what they did well" and their arrows - "what they need to improve on next time."

These completed sheets come home after the weekend.  Your child will bring home this week's sheets on Monday evening in his or her agenda bag :)  Please sit with your child at some point during the school week and go over their answers and have them explain some strategies or new learnings from this work.  Thank you so much for your support in our "Brain Breakfast" program!

Math:
This week, we worked on comparing numbers to 100 and 1,000 using the greater than (>) and less than (<) symbols.  I showed the kids a helpful way to remember how to correctly use these signs.  Students created their own Ali the Alligator.  Ask them about this :)

Remember boys and girls, “Ali the alligator always eats the greater number!” They are really getting the hang of this concept!  I taught them a math game to help them along with this too which we’ll play again!  Here they are in math action!

Check out the video link below with your child to reinforce this learning at home.

Writing:
We have been talking and sharing a lot about what 'Good Writers' do in their writing. Together, we came up with some effective ideas that we will use when we WRITE!  Students will be required to check over their work prior to handing it in and asking themselves:

Ask your child:  What are some things that effective (good) writers do in their writing?

Writing:
Over the next several weeks, your child will be learning about writing a Recount.  Below I have posted the expectations for this, but first see if your child can share with you the following:  What is a recount?  When you write a recount what parts do you need to include?

This week, students received a language notebook which they are using for reading and writing responses.  Our writing learning goal is: We are learning to write a “Recount” (retelling an event in sequence).  Students had the opportunity to think and write about a special event from their summer holiday.  I learned so much from reading their entries!!  I am delighted to see everyone enjoyed spending time with their family making special memories.

During our Meet the Teacher Night, you will have the opportunity to see your child's writing entries they have completed thus far :)  If you wish to see them sooner, please indicate this in the agenda and your child can bring it home.

Picture Day:
This is just a friendly reminder to inform you that our school photo day is on Thurs. Sept. 26th.  Bring those bright smiles and eyes boys and girls!
Picture retakes will be on Fri. Nov. 1st.

G.N.E. Field Trip:
Next Friday, our class and 7 students will be going to the G.N.E. for a field trip!  I am sure many of you have taken your families there at some point in the past, but if you haven’t, this is a wonderful opportunity for your child to experience it.  Even if they have attended, please know this revisit will have an emphasis on the curriculum expectations for science and social studies.  We will be learning about animal adaptations, the difference between urban and rural communities, life cycles, and much more!

If you wish to volunteer for this trip, please note: *all volunteers must have a valid CRC/VSS to attend. Please contact the school office if you are unsure if you are on the school's approved volunteer list*

In addition, please review with your child the importance of listening and following our rules for a field trip.  Sticking with the group is very important as this venue is big and there are many other schools attending too.  My students safety is of utmost importance to me.  If you know that your child requires extra support (following rules and expectations the first time they are given), I encourage you to attend this trip.  Your assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Terry Fox Run:
Our Terry Fox run will be held at Nottawa School on Thurs. Sept. 26th from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.  All families are welcome to join us on the school track!  We are hoping to collect "Toonies for Terry" by raising $2.00 for each student.  Money may be sent to school beginning next week (Mon. Sept. 16th – Thurs. Sept. 26th ).

Alternatively, you may wish to sponsor us online at the following link:

Thank you in advance for your generous contributions!!

Music Recorders:
On Day 3’s from 2:30 - 3:10 p.m. Mr. Morin will be teaching your child music.  He is beginning a unit on how to read music and play the recorder.  Students are welcome to purchase a new recorder from him for $6.00 or they may wish to sign out a used one free of cost.

If you do send in money for a new recorder, please place the money in a zip-lock baggy labelled with your child’s name on it as well as “music recorder.”

Thank you to all the students and their parents who have already done this.  The kids are excited to begin learning this new musical instrument!

Cameron:
Thank you Cameron and his family for bringing in a meaningful card activity for us to enjoy as a class family!  The activity focuses on communicating our thoughts, feelings and emotions about various topics.  We did one this week!

We worked in partners using accountable talk to discuss the following:  What makes YOU unique?  Ask your child what he or she shared with their partner and what they learned about their peers :-)

Mindfulness:
When you're feeling frustrated, angry, or sad by someone, try these mindful strategies and see how you feel afterwards :)  I am optimistic you'll release those emotions and feel lighter and brighter.  It may not work right away, but if you try and TRY again ...you will get there.

Let's always spread COMPASSION in our thoughts, words, and actions!!

Growth Mindset:
"In a world if you can be anything, BE KIND!"

Namaste,
Ms. Gill
