Dear Families,
Oral Hygiene Kit:
First off, I would like to say thank you to all the students and their parents for taking the time to visit our Classroom Blog each week! It is an opportunity to listen, learn, see, and celebrate what's happening in our Learning Community!
I'm encouraging you to continue to do so as your child is working extremely hard to improve his or her achievement academically, socially and behaviourally to put in their personal best to help them REACH FOR THE TOP!
Secondly, it was wonderful to hear and see some pictures of all the heart warming thankful stone sharing families did over the Thanksgiving long weekend. It brought happy tears to my eyes! Thank you for embracing and carrying on my teachings from school to your homes. It means a lot to me!
Below you will see Coleton's family posted a growth mindset at their entrance for their family members to read and enjoy as they arrived for their feast :) Amazing!!
Language:
Students have been working on writing Recounts - retelling an event in sequence. This week, they wrote about their Thanksgiving weekend. I did a mini-lesson on how good writers add detail to their writing by using adjectives to describe nouns.
As reader, it is important to be able to visualize (create mental pictures) as you read and an effective writer helps the reader do this through their word choice in their writing. It is wonderful to see students try their best every time they write.
At this point in our school year, many require reminders to slow down as they write, proof-read their work carefully by asking themselves: Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?, and utilizing our editing checklist to make necessary changes. This will be a continued goal for us throughout term 1. With continued practice, there will be PROGRESS :)
What is Feedback?
In class, we have been regularly talk about feedback. As a teacher, it is very important for me to provide students with timely feedback to continually help them improve their achievements in various subject areas.
So this week, I had students write their own feedback for their Recounts to help improve their achievement by recognizing their STAR - what they feel they did well and an ARROW - what they feel they can improve upon next time.
In other words, they are learning how to self-assess their work. This will be a continued goal in our class throughout the year. Soon, I will have students provide peer feedback so they can assist their classmates :) I know this will be a very valuable tool and skill for them!
Math:
For the next while, we will be learning about Time, Temperature, and Linear Measurement. Please refer to the photo/links below for the specific expectations that I will be teaching.

To support your child further in this math unit, please ask them the following questions:
a) What time do you eat breakfast, lunch and dinner?
b) What is your bedtime? When do you get up for school? How many hours do you get to sleep each night?
c) Share a special time in your day? When do you start that activity? When do you stop that activity? How long was this activity?
d) The time is 10:45 a.m. What time will it be in 25 minutes?

On Day 2's from 12:10 – 1:00 p.m., Ms. West has been teaching the students Art. She has been enjoying the class very much and has been creating lessons and activities that are very meaningful and fun for the kids! Ask your child what he or she has learned so far from Ms. West :)
Health:
In Health, we are learning about Healthy & Active Living. This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart and I think it's very important for us all to be mindful and conscientious of our physical, mental, and emotional health / well-being.
Please read over the expectations as this is what will be covered this term:
Please read over the expectations as this is what will be covered this term:

- ways to incorporate daily activity in your life to increase your physical and mental well-being

Oral Hygiene Kit:
I hope your child enjoyed sharing his or her oral hygiene kit with you (see below). We have been doing a lot of learning about the importance of taking care of our physical, mental, and oral health.
I shared my experiences with students when I was child the struggles I had with flossing my teeth. It took me well into my adulthood to finally make flossing a part of my daily routine and let me tell you, it's made a significant impact for me and I hope it does for your child too! If they make this a habit at a young age, they will most likely notice the wonderful benefits into adulthood.
Spirit Day & Character Recognition Assembly:
Our next character recognition assembly will take place Wednesday October 30th at 9:30 a.m. Mrs. O's class will be leading this and I'm very excited to see their presentation. I know they'll be working hard in class to prepare for this.
I am giving lots of notice due to obligations for parents and just wanted to give my families a chance to plan if they wish to attend. I will ensure I give notice to the parents whose child is receiving an award. Stay tuned for a note in their agenda!
We will be honouring and recognizing all students from K-8 for Cooperation. I'll reveal our well deserving recipients in my blog post, stay tuned :)
Molly:
Thank you Molly for taking the time to make me this heart-warming picture. Your message "Peace is Love" is something I value very much!! I will keep this drawing on my cabinet for the year as it's an important reminder for us all to ... spread ... LOVE ... and ... PEACE ...everywhere we go!
Mindfulness:
A pep talk about teamwork and leadership! What traits do you need to be an effective leader? Remember to never give up even when things get difficult! Keep a POSITIVE MINDSET. Try! TRY! TRY!
