Dear Families,
It was wonderful to see SO many heart-warming messages! We took time to brainstorm adjectives (describing words) about these boys and girls and how they must have felt. Ask your child what some of his or her words they chose to describe these Aboriginal people who had to experience going to a residential school away from their families.
If you haven't already done so, please take some time over the weekend to enjoy listening to your child's 'Every Child Matters' writing piece. I'm so proud of their powerful messages!! As well, you may wish to listen to the book below entitled: When I Was Eight. We read it in class and students gained a greater understanding of what indigenous children went through and how they felt.
In our class, we will continue to remember all the boys and girls of Indigenous culture. We cannot change what happened in the past, but we will all move forward in the spirit of reconciliation and respect!!
Peer Feedback:
It was another productive week looking closely at our writing pieces and offering one another constructive feedback to continue improving upon the content and clarity of our written work!
Here the students are collaborating with one another to offer feedback on sticky notes. These will be posted in our writing notebooks.
Word Work Game:
I introduced a card game to help students enjoy reading in a FUN and interactive way. It helps them with their long and short vowel sounds. We will be using this during our literacy workstations time to build upon our vocabulary.
Raz-Kids:
I hope you had the opportunity to read the note that came home for this reading program. I showed the kids how to access it, and my hope is it will be utilized on a weekly basis as our school purchased licenses for this great resource!
If you have any issues with it, please don't hesitate to contact me and I can show you the process step by step :)
Health:
This week, we learned about the difference between REAL or WHOLE FOODS vs. PROCESSED FOODS. Ask your child what some of his or her key learnings were from this lesson. He or she may wish to re-watch the video posted below to use specific evidence from the text. This was a very informative read aloud presented in an engaging way (it's rhymes). We enjoyed it!
Try this activity at home! See photo below :)
Math:
We are continuing our learning with telling time. We did the following activities (see photos below) this week! Take a look at the questions and see if your child can share some of his or her answers.
Measuring time is a very important concept for daily life and most students are getting the hang of recording elapsed (the passage of time) time as well! Ask them what ELAPSED means :)
Stretch Your Thinking:
Try this math question at home with your child (see photo below). Encourage them to use the 4-Block Problem Solving Method (understand, plan, solve, explain).

Teacher Preview:
Ms. Stewart, Mrs. O, Mrs. Hammond, Mrs. Beattie and I went to Mississauga Thurs. evening to do a teacher's preview so we can prepare for this trip. We are anticipating the kids having a blast! But also want to ensure everyone is safe.
I am requesting for families to please talk with your child about the importance of sticking with their group, being kind/respectful to all items presented, and to not run at this exhibition. There is LOTS to see and do, but we must remember to stay as a group with the assigned parent volunteer.
When talking with your child, please refer to my chart below as this is what I will be expecting due to the nature of this trip. Thank you for taking the time to support your child and his or her classmates so we can all enjoy this experience.
Photo Retakes:
Thank you Hannah for the wonderful kindness stone you painted :) It is very important to always remember to "BREATHE" deeply. It definitely calms our minds and bodies. The time and effort it took for you to make this special gift for me, made my heart soar!!
Coleton:
Thank you Coleton for bringing in this heartfelt gift for me as well this week. How blessed am I?! It certainly filled my bucket!! The adjectives you used are so uplifting!! I value our bond and look forward to continuing to build upon it throughout the rest of our school year together! From my heart to yours ...NAMASTE!
Emma:
I get so excited when I see and hear students taking their learning to new levels! Emma created an at home binder where she is doing her own personal note-taking about various subjects I'm teaching to further demonstrate all her knowledge she's gained. Amazing!!
Emma's taken a particular interest in Health and the importance of keeping an active and healthy mind, body, and spirit. I'm delighted you're showing such a determined attitude to keep learning and growing your brain power! Your hippocampus is FILLED WITH information :) Your initiative and responsibility for your learning is inspiring! Keep it UP, Emma!
Halloween is just around the corner! Watch this interactive and important video to help your child think about and take action to be SAFE when he or she is in the neighbourhood. You may wish to emphasize these safety tips with your child :)
Growth Mindset:
In anticipation of Halloween next week, students are feeling very excited and enthusiastic! I'm already hearing about the unique costumes students will be wearing! If you would like to send me a picture of your child in his or her costume, please do so via my e-mail: pgill@scdsb.on.ca and I can include it in next week's post!
Language:
This week's writing focus was on writing a message in paragraph form to the Indigenous, First Nation, Metis, and Inuit children who attended residential schools. Students were asked to consolidate their learning from Orange Shirt Day to demonstrate their new understanding from this topic. It was wonderful to see SO many heart-warming messages!
