Dear Families,
This week, we experienced our first snow day of the school year.  I hope everyone remained safe on the roads yesterday as you commuted to work.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!  Enjoy playing out in the snow with your loved ones!  It looks like it's going to be a beautiful weekend for outdoor play!

Math:
We have wrapped up our Patterning & Algebra Unit and we will have our assessment on Monday.  Thank you students who have been working on their practice questions at home!

Our next unit will focus on Geometry & Spatial Sense:  Location & Movement
The expectations are as follows:

– describe movement from one location to another using a grid map (e.g., to get from the swings to the sandbox, move three squares to the right and two squares down)

– identify flips, slides, and turns, through investigation using concrete materials and physical motion, and name flips, slides, and turns as reflections, translations, and rotations (e.g., a slide to the right is a translation; a turn is a rotation)

– demonstrate, through investigation, an understanding that a pattern results from repeating an action (e.g., clapping, taking a step forward every second), repeating an operation (e.g., addition, subtraction), using a transformation (e.g., slide, flip, turn), or making some other repeated change to an attribute (e.g., colour, orientation)

McLaren Art Workshop:
The children really enjoyed their print making workshop earlier this week!  The ladies who ran this program were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about art.  This really helped with student engagement!  All completed pieces will be coming home before the holidays.  Stay tuned!!

Now, check us out as we put our artistic minds and hearts to work!!  Thank you to Mr. Beattie for these wonderful pictures you took!!

Writing:
Here's an exciting initiative which I can't wait to participate in with my students!  Our class will be joining in on the 'Holiday Happy Mail' Program.  What is it?  The mission is to bring joy to the elderly by distributing handmade cards and written letters.  If you're interested in having your other loved ones participate in this program, here is the link with more information!!
https://staygoldsociety.org/

There is an epidemic of loneliness among our elderly.  Every day, many seniors are spending what are supposed to be their golden years in long-term care homes with little or no connection to the outside world. Many leave their rooms for only meals and medical appointments.  Many have little family left, or have families who live hours away and don’t visit often.

The seniors who move into long-term care facilities have to leave their homes, beloved pets and close friends.  We often forget that seniors are a vibrant, valuable part of our communities with so much knowledge that can be shared with others.  We’re here to remind seniors of that, one kind act at a time.

In this age of screens and instant communication, we often forget the power of a handwritten note. Who wouldn’t love to receive a kind, personalized card complete with original artwork and a handwritten message out of the blue? You have the power to brighten a senior’s day with just a few minutes of your time by creating a handmade card that will be hand delivered to a senior in a long-term care facility.

My class is excited to begin their letter and card writing for a senior at Sunset Manor which is located in Collingwood.  We will begin these next week!  It will be a very meaningful writing activity as students are demonstrating this month's character trait: EMPATHY!!  We are thinking about the feelings of the elderly :)

Action for Happiness:
We're on a roll in our class by showing our empathetic ways!  I'm sure your child came home excited to share our kindness challenge for this month!!

For me and many others, the holiday season is an excellent time to stop, think, and reflect upon all the wonderful ways we can spread JOY, PEACE, and KINDNESS for not only our loved ones, but also for those who need us the most who may not have a hot meal or warm place to rest at night.

Together we can  make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Enjoy taking the DO GOOD DECEMBER challenge with your family!

Nottawa's Christmas Post Office:
Mrs. Johnson has once again set up our Nottawa Christmas Post Office in the library!  Doesn’t it look great!?  Thank you for doing this for our whole school to enjoy!

Starting Monday, students are encouraged to think of someone at the school to write a letter to.  It can be to a teacher, EA, DECE, principal, custodian, sibling, or friend.  Have fun with this boys and girls!  We will continue with letter writing opportunity until the Holidays!

Social Studies:
The grade 4's have been working hard on their provinces & territories presentations.  We've had a variety of presenters and I just wanted to acknowledge them for their efforts.  Thank you for ALL your hard work at home to prepare for this project.  It is appreciated!!

You certainly have inspired your peers and the grade 3's are now on the edge of their seats just waiting to share their discoveries of Groups of People in Early Canada.

Holiday Concert News:
A friendly reminder that we will be having our 3 performances on Wed. Dec. 11th!  The first will be at 11:30 AM (dress rehearsal) and the evening performance will be at 6:30 PM.  Students are to meet me at 6:15 PM in the library!

  • Students MUST have their RECORDER to participate!

  • Students are encouraged to dress in their favourite holiday outfit emphasizing the colours GREEN, RED, and WHITE!

We’re excited for this event and hope you are too!

Santa Leads the Way to Empathy:
Who better than Santa to understand the feelings and needs of others? This month’s character trait is Empathy!!!

To help reinforce this trait, we are asking our Nottawa students to think about others, especially the people who may be visiting My Friends’ House (Womens’ Shelter) this holiday season. For more information about this organization, please visit the following website:

Guess what?!  Santa will be visiting our school on Thursday December 19th at 1:40 - 2:30 P.M. It will be his 4th year at our school! He's a busy man, but always thinks about the feelings of others and he's proud of our staff and students here at Nottawa and wants to celebrate with US. To date, we have donated over 4 cars full of items for My Friends' House! This is an organization near and dear to my heart!!

We are asking students to bring in 1 donation for My Friends’ House from the wish list that was provided in a note that I sent home today.

All items must be new and unused. Children who support “My Friends’ House” will get the opportunity to give their donation to Santa on Dec. 19th.

Supporting Barbara Weider House:
Speaking of supporting organizations within our community, it is that time of the year again!! Home Horizon has just received a shipment of beautiful bowls for the Annual Bowls for Beds event - all in support of Home Horizon and the Barbara Weider House for homeless youth in our area.

Some of you may know, the Barbara Weider House offers a place of safety and hope for homeless youth.  Its services address the needs of youth in crisis and provides the support to help them master the tasks of adolescence as well as focus on their education and employment opportunities.

Home Horizon | Barbara Weider House

This will be the 11th year of the Bowls for Beds in which school children paint bowls that are purchased by the public at a soup tasting event involving 20 different restaurants serving their most delicious soups.

All funds raised go to the operational costs of the Barbara Weider House which benefit youth who are displaced, in crisis, and need of our help.
This year, the event will take place at the Georgian Bay Hotel on Sunday April 19, 2020 from noon to 2:30 PM.  Last year, Bowls for Beds sold out and raised almost $35,000!!  How amazing :-)
To help support this foundation, our class along with Ms. Stewart's will have the opportunity to participate in a program called painting "Bowls for Beds" on January 10, 2020 in our school library.  We here at Nottawa take great pride in thinking about the feelings of others!

Noah:
Thank you to Noah and his family for providing an interactive and cooperative game called Suspend for our class.

It requires the learning skills of collaboration and the character trait empathy.  Here are some students in cooperative action!  The Flints generosity is appreciated!!

Joella:
Thank you Joella for this wonderful picture and message!  I absolutely agree!  "In a world if you can be anything, BE KIND!"  With a child like you, our future is bright!!

When I hung up Joella's message, she said to me, "Ms. Gill, I think the grinch is a misunderstood character.  He is actually kind.  Sometimes, we judge others too quickly without really getting to know them.  It's important to get to know someone first!"  YES, Joella!  How amazing!!!

Raelynn:
On Wednesday, we had the pleasure of watching the Nutcracker performed by Fleetwood Dance Studio.

This was extra special for our class as Raelynn was one of the amazing performers!  It was great watching you participate in this!  You're a very talented dancer and I could tell how much it meant to you to have your class family's support.  Your smile says it all :)  We are so proud of your commitment to this program and putting in your personal best!

Mindfulness:
What can we do to make this holiday season better for one and ALL?  Watch this video to get inspired!  We all have it in us to give :)

Growth Mindset:
"Be grateful.  Be caring.  Be WHO YOU ARE!" - Cameron
Namaste,
