Dear Families,
It was wonderful to see my students again on Tuesday!  Thank you to ALL the families who supported their children in completing homework that was sent home the previous Thursday.  I truly appreciate your understanding!

It certainly is a sensitive period for education, but please know, that my heart and soul is in the best interest of your child, and I will continue to do my part to ensure they receive the best education academically, socially, and emotionally from me.  I will continue to work hard to provide my very best in school and out of school!!

Jersey Day:
Today, we had a school spirit day - wearing our favourite sports jersey!  Everyone participated with enthusiasm and school pride! We truly have the BEST students, staff, and families! Thank you for demonstrating spirit!

As you can tell, we have MANY sports fans and athletes in my class!  Growing up, sports was a significant part of my life (especially soccer and basketball).  I couldn't imagine not being involved or part of a basketball or soccer team.  It helped me express myself beyond the books and I valued this.

Every week, I get to share in on the enthusiasm of my students sports teams they're a part of like hockey, dance, choir, swimming, skiing, skating, etc ...

Sports are so much more than playing a game, it helps instill core values such as sportspersonship, dedication, and work ethic.

Continue to strive and thrive on and off the field, ice, court, dance hall, boys and girls!!

February's Character Trait is:

We are fortunate to be in a school culture that is sensitive to the needs of others – staff and students work together to ensure that we foster a community that is safestrong, and free.  This being said, as your child’s teacher, I will continue to explicitly model, guide, reinforce, and support inclusion so all my students feel a sense of belonging J

Speeches:
On Tuesday, our school held the Annual Speech Competition in the gym.  Students from grades 4-8 delivered their speeches to our staff, students, honourary judges, and some parents who were able to attend.

Lou's older sister Ivy!  Congrats on advancing to the speech competition held this weekend!

Beau's sister Grace!!  I taught her in grade 3, she did so well!!
I am so proud of all students who prepared and delivered their speeches in their classes.  It takes a lot of courage and poise to stand up in front of a group of people and share a speech.  Everyone should be so proud of their efforts!  Always reach for the stars and try your best in everything you do!

As shared in last week's post, despite my many opportunities to public speak, I still get the jitters and have to compose myself before I have to speak in front of large audiences such as in our assemblies.  I was definitely thinking of all the speakers who had to patiently wait for their turn to speak.  Delivering a speech is a memorable experience and helps build upon ones growing confidence in public speaking.

A special recognition to our very own Cameron who represented our class family at the gym.  Cameron was absolutely amazing!!  He projected his voice, spoke with expression, used effective eye-contact, and had confident body language!!  I couldn't stop smiling and even had tears of JOY!  It was a heart-warming experience and made US all so proud!

Hannah:
Thank you Hannah for providing the class and I with fortune cookies to accompany your speech about Chinese New Year.  It was a lovely added touch and we especially enjoyed sharing aloud the various fortunes!  Mine read:  "A good reputation is more valuable than money."

You also dressed the part wearing red which is a colour of good luck!  Well done, Hannah!  This was a great touch!

Liam:
For his speech, Liam brought in a toy airplane to teach his peers about the various parts of it.  He was so passionate about this because his father's a pilot who inspires him daily.  Way to go Liam!  You were so knowledgeable about this!  I also loved that you dressed the part as well :)  What a great shirt!!

Math:
We spent time this week learning all about pictographs and how to effectively display data using this form.  Students were asked to use last week's information and create their own pictographs.

Click on the photo below and work through the problem with your child!

Remember boys and girls, all graphs need:  a title, labels on the x-axis and y-axis, and an appropriate scale/key to fit the data.

Next week, we will be wrapping up this unit and I have provided some practice questions to help prepare students for an assessment on this unit next week on Feb. 7th.

Social Studies:
Today, the grade 3's had the opportunity to guide and teach my grade 4's how to include various non-fiction text features into their province and territories google slides presentation.  For example, a table of contents, captions, glossary, and making a friendly quiz!  Check in with your child and ask them who they worked with during this experience and how they helped.

It was wonderful to see all students collaborate, cooperate, and have fun with this process.  I love providing students with opportunities to build upon and grow their leadership skills!  Check them out!  We will continue this into next week as well :)

Kaitlin Morin:
This year, Mr. Morin's daughter Kaitlin decided to do her speech on helping the homeless in our community.  What an amazing topic!!  This is a cause that my class and I have learned about and there is another opportunity to help!

See below a message from Kaitlin which was shared on Wednesday's morning announcements and how you can contribute.

From Kaitlin:
"It's cold out there! On February 22, I'm going to do something about it. Together with thousands of Canadians across the country, I'll be walking and fundraising to support hungry, homeless, and hurting people and families in my community. Please give generously or sign up to be apart of the Nottawa Team."

Black History Month:
As January soon comes to an end and we will be entering February, it’s time to celebrate Black History Month!  To get our hearts and minds thinking about this I showed my students this brief video below.  Have a look :)

Black History is a topic near and dear to my heart because as a young child, I faced racism and prejudice due to the colour of my skin.  I have shared this experience with my students and I do it to help them learn the importance of treating everyone with love and respect no matter their race, orientation, size, ability, or religion.

We are all human, and it is our right to share and live in equality!!

Black History Month is a time to celebrate and remember all the ways that Black Canadians and Americans have contributed to North America's history and culture.  Throughout February, this celebration provides a chance to learn about African cultures too.

In class, my emphasis will not focus on the negativity that many people faced in the past, but more so on the positive changes that have come as a result of the actions took by inspirational civil rights activists like Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou, and many more!

We will also learn all about and acknowledge the amazing contributions made by black Canadians who helped shape our country.

  • Viola Desmond (Canadian entrepreneur who fought segregation and is now on our very own Canadian $10.00 bill)
  • Lincoln Alexander (first black member of Parliament in Canadian history)
  • Carrie Best (founder of Nova Scotia's first black owned and published newspaper)
  • Elijah McCoy (inventory and mechanical engineer)

"If we want to help the world, we must be the FUEL to CHANGE IT!"

It is up to us and our children to help reinforce a future that will be safe, strong, and EQUAL.  We have come a long way from the injustices of the past, but we must remember to always put in the work to ensure we CONTINUE to live with EQUALITY!!

Wye Marsh:
As indicated on the note that came home this evening, on Monday, my class will have the pleasure of having a representative from Wye Marsh come to do an in-class session to teach the students about wildlife.

This is a Board sponsored initiative to help children learn about nature and its inhabitants.  It'll be a very interesting and informative experience!

We will be participating in this learning during periods 3-4.  Please ask your child what he or she learned when they come home on  Monday!

Mindfulness - Bell Let's Talk:
Mental illness is a very common form of human pain and suffering. Being a good listener and asking how you can help or simply just being there for people you care about can be the first step to recovery.

Image result for what is mental health"

On Wednesday, we had a class discussion about the importance of being educated about the stigmas surrounding mental health.  Many students were not aware of this topic so it was an excellent opportunity for me to touch upon this and you know, I will definitely be reinforcing mental health throughout the remainder of our school year.

We carefully watched and listened to the video below.  It gave us a clearer understanding about this topic and we have a greater appreciation for those who are affected by mental health.

Ask your child what some of the ways someone who suffers with mental illness can get help!  Taking care of our mental wellness is equally as important as tending to our physical well-being.

Growth Mindset:
"Don't give up even if something gets in your way!" - Lou

Congrats again on your achievement for the Remembrance Day Poster Contest, Lou!  I know you'll cherish this certificate!

Namaste,
Ms. Gill
