Dear Families,
I think we can all agree that this week was absolutely beautiful! The welcomed warmer temperatures and SUNSHINE was glorious wasn't it!? I'm sure many of you spent time outdoors! Below, you will find some students who took full advantage of their backyards having a blast!!
It was a shortened school week with Monday being the holiday, but as always, students continued working hard in their distance learning. I am overjoyed by the efforts and outcome of students' completed tasks! A big thank you to parents who are assisting their child(ren). It does not go unnoticed :)
Virtual Lesson on Google Meet:
Exciting news everyone! On Monday, I have invited a VERY special teacher from our school to join our google meet to do a lesson about Bees and Making Honey! Any guesses on who it may be? She is excited to join us and share her knowledge and passion! The virtual lesson will begin at 9:15 A.M.
Thank you to ALL participants for our Meet on Monday (17/25) and Friday! It's always a highlight seeing YOU!!
John:
Thank you Mrs. Dineen for sharing these photos with me! It's so wonderful seeing John in his element catching frogs and making bird feeders! I find being outdoors enjoying nature and the fresh air re-energizes the mind, body, and spirit! Happy to see your son making the most of his time in the amazing comforts of his own backyard!
Noah:
Thank you Mrs. Flint for sharing these sweet images of Noah in your veggie garden! He has been very excited by this and has lent a hand throughout the process with seeding, planting, and watering. What a wonderful opportunity to learn and GROW ;)
Lou:
Thank your Mrs. Foubert for sharing Lou's very first BIG CATCH! It's lovely seeing the pride and joy in her smile :) Lou also made the most of her time outdoors this week! LOVE IT :-)
Kali:
Thank you Ms. Pyjor for sharing this photograph :) Today is Kali's 9th birthday everyone! As a tradition, her family sets up a birthday scavenger hunt. Kali gets to search for ALL her gifts in a fun and meaningful way! That's terrific :) I wish I had this when I was growing up (hehe). How FUN! Wishing you a wonderful birthday weekend filled with love and laughter with your amazing parents!
Mystery Doug Live:
Did your child get to tune into the 35 minute LIVE science show yesterday afternoon? If so, I really hope they enjoyed watching and learning about all the neat things that happen in space and we even got to see astronaut Jessica Meir!
Dr. Meir helped answer various questions from children around the world! For example: How do you wash your hands in space? What's it like to drink water there? What kinds of things do astronauts do in their free time in space?
Dr. Meir even shared that her team and her grew vegetables in space like lettuce and they enjoyed eating a salad with it!!
Doug and his daughters also shared a fun little activity to try at home - Making a Straw Rocket. Give it a try using this link: https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/learn/project/make-a-straw-rocket/
During school closures, I am grateful Mystery Doug provides these science shows for kids! He shared that he's received over 1 million questions since beginning this program. Doug is certainly very keen, knowledgeable, KIND, and always puts KIDS QUESTIONS FIRST!
Thank you Doug for your ongoing passion and commitment to teaching children about the wonders of our world!!
School Closures Extended:
It is with a heavy heart that I share the following. Many of you will know by now that it was announced on Tuesday afternoon that schools will remain closed for the rest of the school year due to the ongoing affects of COVID-19.
I do respect the decision that was made as it is in the best interest of all our staff, students, families, and beyond to help continue flattening the curve to this virus. I think we have all done OUR PART in this and for that, I'm very proud of all of us!!
As result of this news, truthfully, it's been an emotional week for me. Up until Tuesday, I had held out HOPE that I would be reunited with my students again. To say I will MISS not closing out the year with your child face to face is an understatement, but I hold comfort in the MANY PRECIOUS MEMORIES we shared as a class family. They're sealed in my heart. Please use this blog as a 'yearbook' of sorts and you can go back in the archives to celebrate everything that we experienced!!
Student Items:
There have been some questions regarding retrieving students' items that are still at school (e.g, learning tools, indoor shoes, clothing, etc ...). Please know that as soon as I hear anything about this process, I will certainly let you know as will Mrs. Beattie and Mr. Perry. The School Board is working hard to come up with a plan that ensures the continued safety of all families. Stay tuned :)
Talent Show:
Mrs. Johnson has EXTENDED THE DEADLINE for the talent show submissions until May 29th. If your child is still interested in contributing his or her talents for this annual event, please send it in by the end of next week.
So far from our class, thank you to Hannah, Liam, and Sidney for sharing your talents with Mrs. Johnson!! She told me about this earlier today and it truly made my day!! I look forward to seeing your TALENTS SHINE!
Mindfulness:
In the video below, the class takes you through what being in the moment means. #Mindfulness is all about living in the moment. We live in an age of distraction and spend the better part of our lives planning over the future or ruminating over the past.
"We're living in a world that contributes in a major way to mental fragmentation, disintegration, distraction, decoherence," says Buddhist scholar B. Alan Wallace.
Life unfolds in the present and yet we let the present slip away like quick sand: unseized, unrelished and totally squandered in our worries about the future or in our quest to understand the past.
So, what does being present really mean? It's as simple as being in touch to the sound of a bird, to the falling rain, to the laughter of our child, to the thunder of the cloud, to the hello of a friend.
Please take a moment to listen to the video and discuss some of the ways YOU CAN BE PRESENT in your thoughts, words, and actions today ...and EVERYDAY!
Try some of the suggested mindful strategies and enjoy living your best life! This MOMENT just needs to be still and you can feel the silence within. All you need to do is "breathe."
Growth Mindset:
I came across this great activity (see picture below) from biglifejournal (an excellent resource). I know that being away from school and peers has posed its challenges as learning at home is very different than in the regular classroom with your teachers and friends.
Students may find themselves feeling down or unmotivated at times to do something if at first glance it seems 'too hard' or makes them 'uncomfortable.' When these feelings arise, you may find it helpful to have your child try out the activity posted below!
Remember, when we are learning something new, it might feel hard and uncomfortable. That uncomfortable feeling is YOUR BRAIN TRYING TO LEARN. Being uncomfortable is really important because this is what makes our squishy brains change to a different shape.
If you help your brain and push through the hard parts, your brain will reshape itself. And in the end, you will get better at what you're doing!!
