Dear Families,
Week 4 - check! It's been a month since we've all been immersed in distance learning. I don't say this lightly, I am SO proud of everyone! Each week as I prepare my blog, I browse through my archive of pictures and I can't help but smile as I reflect upon ALL the amazing memories we shared as a class family. Here's one from jersey day. Being a sports enthusiast, it's one of my favourites :-)
Although distance learning has posed its challenges, the rewards have been wonderful too as I'm seeing so many at home learning experiences of my students that parents have been providing. Many of these opportunities are more than I could ever provide at school. They're superb! Kids are learning to cook, build sheds, gardens, sew, fish, and explore so many other magnificent things that I could list on and on!
Scroll down near the bottom of this post and you'll see all the neat learning that my students (Coleton, Noah, Cam, Emma, Ashton) did this week that parents have shared with me!!
Now, please take a moment to watch this inspirational video below. I strongly feel it's a reflection of my families (parents) who are doing their absolute best to navigate and help their child(ren) be the BEST VERSION OF THEMSELVES FOR THE WORLD!
I know I expressed my gratitude in last week's post, but I will be doing this time and time again because YOU MATTER. Everything I assign or post is NOT possible without your unconditional love and support. You are the BRIDGE that keeps your family whole each and every day during this unprecedented time and I want you to know, I understand and am here for you.
Thank YOU parents/guardians who are in my eyes the Mr. Jensen who are seeing and bringing out the very best in their child(ren) as we continue on this learning journey. As we soon embark upon week #5, always remember ...
School Principals' Day:
Today (May 1st), we recognize School Principals' Day! Throughout the school year, these educators assume the commitment to lead our young people to a prosperous future. They support and guide quality teachers and staff resulting in productive learning (right now distance) environments for our children. Thank you for ALL you do!
I would like to personally acknowledge our very own Mr. Perry for all that he does for our staff, students, families, and the community to make Nottawa the amazing school that it is!
Below, I have posted a few photos of Mr. Perry agreeing to a pie in the face to help show his support for all the students and families who contributed to our Terry Fox Fundraising efforts as a school!
Mr. Perry has gone above and beyond to ensure that ALL students have been provided with all the materials required for this transition to distance learning. This has not been an easy task. He lives an hour away and has driven to the school on numerous occasions to safely provide technology and other tools for our families. Mr. Perry does so with a smile on his face :)
We are proud to have a principal who cares about the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of our staff and students.
Character Trait:
This month's character trait is Respect - "We treat other people the way we want them to treat us." To get my student's thinking about this trait in their thoughts, words, and actions, please show them this public service announcement.
In my experience, I have learned that respect is NOT a given, it is EARNED. Remember, if you give it (respect), YOU GET IT!
Student Slideshow:
Below is a message from Mrs. Beattie (our secretary). We hope you enjoyed the slideshow (video messages) last week from the staff to all students and families! I still find myself re-watching it on my 'lunch breaks.' I miss my colleagues dearly!
In the spirit of connection ...
Thank you to all participants in our second google meet session! We had 19/25 of you!! I appreciate all of you who had your Nighthawk gear on to show your school pride and spirit :-)
During our Meet, I was able to share my NEW LAYOUT for my weekly student agenda which I believe worked out well this week! I will continue with this layout as it is more engaging and user friendly. I have received positive feedback from students and parents about this, many thanks!
To help my students remain connected with their other teachers, I have sent out invites to Mr. Morin (music), Mrs. Johnson (drama, dance, media, science), Mme Wylie (French), Ms. West (art) and Mr. Perry to join us in our next Meet which will take place on Monday during period 1 (9:00 - 9:50 AM).
Nighthawk Help Centre:
Great news! Ms. West and Mrs. Johnson are teaming up to provide daily google meets for any students / families who require it! They will be able to support students with class work, technology issues, useful resources, and any other needs that may arise. Bottom line, they're both keen and excited to share their knowledge and to interact with our students.
Most students by now are comfortable with this tool, however, if you need assistance finding the help center in Google Meet, please email Ms. West (twest@scdsb.on.ca) or Mrs. Johnson (majohnson@scdsb.on.ca)
Talent Show:
Are you interested in participating in this year's annual Talent Show? If so, please check out the poster below for details. It'll surely be a different experience than previous years, but we CAN still showcase all the wonderful and terrific talents of our Nottawa students and their families!
Noah:
Thank you Mrs. Flint for sharing this oh so sweet photo of Noah ready to prepare your family's gardens with Dad. It brings me sheer JOY and HAPPINESS seeing his smile and helping out around the house. Outdoor learning at its best!
Coleton:
Thank you to Mrs. Robertson for sharing these photos with me. Check out Coleton's latest home project! As a family, they are constructing a wood shed and sugar shack. As you can see, Coleton has been very hands on helping his Dad with measuring and cutting and making everything level.
Most of the material is recycled like the old beams holding up the structure. The roof will be composed of re-purposed steel they took off an existing structure. This will house wood for Coleton's wood stove and they will enclose their maple syrup boiler in the end so they can stay warm and cozy while they watch the sap boil next season.
Monday was such a beautiful sunny warm day! Coleton made the most of it by learning HOW to fish! He's sure getting the hang of it :) Later on in the aftenoon, he went for a mountain bike on his uncle's property in Duntroon! Ahhh, nothing better than the fresh air and spending QT in nature.
Ashton:
Thank you Mr. Murray for sharing these pictures of your boys with me! Ashton has been helping out his Dad with various outdoor projects to keep their property fresh and clean. They also helped with painting wooden benches yellow. Looks great! So nice to see so many fun and productive experiences outdoors boys!!
Emma:
Here's Emma proudly sharing her math problem of the day "Time to Get Up" with me via email. I really like how she's used pictures (number line), numbers (number sentences), and words (answering the question in a complete sentence with 'I know this because ...'). Great work, Emma! Keep it up!
Cameron:
Thank you Ms. McLachlin for sharing these photos with me of what Cameron's been up to this week!
Cameron has been spending most of his free time building LEGO. Usually Star Wars ships (bet you aren't surprised to hear that! Remember his speech boys and girls!? He did so well and shared it at the gym!)
First, here's a picture of Cameron's latest creation (see below). He built this one after looking at a picture in a star wars book. Free build, no pattern!

Next, here's a picture from this week's math toy car ramp measurement task. Cameron's Dad took
it to the next level and they used different cars and did multiple trials then
ranked the cars performance.
Mom shared that both kids (Cameron and his sister) participated in this math activity and really enjoyed it! Aww, I'm really happy to hear of siblings also participating in some of my weekly activities :-)
Lastly, some pictures from a growing experiment Cameron started for Earth day last week. Cameron's Dad had the kids plant beans and they are
growing under different conditions to compare how well they grow (eg., with water, without water, with light, without light, warm air, cold air, with
soil, without soil etc.). Both Cameron and his sister are loving this and are excited to see
how much each little bean has grown every day!

Namaste,
Ms. Gill
