Dear Families,
Week 5 - check! I've continued to receive positive feedback from students and parents about the new layout for our weekly tasks. I'm delighted to hear this!
It's a true JOY to think, create, and publish all the weekly activities that I do. What's even more exciting is seeing ALL the fantastic work pieces that're uploaded into the various distance learning folders. I can tell students are putting in their personal best which means a lot to me!!
Below, I've posted a photograph from our last in-class visit with Wye Marsh. We spent periods 3/4 building structures and learning about animal adaptations and survival in the glorious snow.
Speaking of which, did you hear we may be getting some of the white stuff this weekend?! Umm, wait, what!? So, I thought why not get into the chilly spirit and share this lovely photo of our class family. Bundle up this weekend everyone!!
Thank you Mrs. Beattie for initiating this amazing video message from our Nottawa families so we can all enjoy it from the cozy comforts of our home.
Mother's Day:
I would like to say a heart-felt thank you to all the Moms of my students who continuously provide their child with the love and nurturing to help them thrive in their Grade 3/4 school year and especially during this new distance learning platform (which hasn't been easy I'm sure with juggling all your responsibilities at home).
Your ongoing support for your child and my teachings is cherished. Thank you for warmly welcoming me this year, it has meant the world to me!
Nighthawk Student Slideshow:
Thank you to all the families who submitted an image to Mrs. Beattie for her student slideshow. She worked so hard on it and is excited with the outcome. It's so important to us to continue to FEEL and BE CONNECTED.
Thank you for sending such positive messages for our school family! In Mrs. Beattie's famous words, thanks for "MAKING IT A GREAT DAY!"
Education Appreciation Week:
This week, it was teacher appreciation week. I would like to take this time to share this recogition with ALL my students' parents who are TEACHERS TOO!! Look at ALL that you're doing to support your child in their distance learning. I could NOT do it without you!!
Thank you for everything you're doing to support my online tasks each and every week! I can imagine it has posed its challenges with juggling work, family, and school work commitments. But, you're not giving up, and you're always doing YOUR BEST!! I value each and everyone of YOU!
To me ... you're ALL ...
I thank YOU! Below you will find a 55 second video that was passed along to me and I thought I'd share.

National Nurses' Week:
Did you know National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th? I know for many, our appreciation during this unprecedented time for what these professionals provide and are sacrificing to ensure others are safe and cared for is immeasurable!!
McHappy Day:
Each year, many Canadians get involved in supporting various causes and charities! McHappy Day is a Canadian tradition where McDonald's donates $1 from the sale of every Big Mac, hot McCafe beverage, and Happy Meal to Ronald McDonald House Charities® , along with other children's charities.
It's a very meaningful cause which helps thousands of families who need this foundation. In addition, it's a cause near and dear to 2 students in our class whose families have first hand benefited from the Ronald McDonald House in Toronto.
Last year (May 2019), our very own Coleton shared his personal journey to health and wellness! He taught us the TRUE meaning of McHappy Day - the importance of giving back to a foundation who helps SO MANY children and their families who need it the most.
I am delighted that with the support of the Ronald McDonald House Coleton was able to recover into the healthy and happy boy he is today!! Your consistent attitude of gratitude is inspiring, Coleton!
Enjoy listening and learning from this video below about the positive impact that the Ronald McDonald House has had on families. It's a remarkable place and deserves our care and attention every YEAR with McHappy Day!
Have a look at what goes on behind the scenes in our Ronald McDonald Houses - which provide free home away from home accommodation for families with sick children in hospital. Find out from families, healthcare experts and our staff why it's important these Houses exist!
Molly:
Thank you Mr. Collins for sharing these photos with me. As a mindfulness activity last week, Molly and her Mom took time to paint outside in the beautiful sunshine. They wrote special messages and images to help spread their love and compassion to others in this time of great need. I am sure who ever comes across your stones, it'll bring sheer JOY and PEACE to their heart and mind. Thank you for being YOU! By the way, I love the Buddha! Looking at it instantly brings me calmness.
Ashton:
Thank you Mr. Murray for sharing these photos of your backyard project. I bet when it's all said and done, it'll be a heavenly haven for your 4 children to play in!!
Here's Ashton "helping Dad out" by sand surfing! What a fabulous idea! Might as well, there is a sand pile there, take advantage of this opportunity to try it out :-) Niiiiice!
Hannah:
Thank you Mrs. Bolton for sharing these photos with me! Looks like Hannah and her siblings are enjoying doing some baking together. I love the heart-shaped cake with blue icing and sprinkles! I'd have devoured a slice for sure!
Can you guess where Hannah is in these 2 images below, boys and girls? You got it! Our outdoor classroom :) What a beauty day to enjoy a walk down to our school and dance!
We sure have the BEST school yard in all of Simcoe County. When we do get back to school, I'm sure no one will ever take it for granted. We are VERY fortunate to learn and play at Nottawa!

I have always been a proud Nighthawk, but after watching this video, it makes me even prouder knowing NO MATTER WHAT, we’re connected through our hearts and minds!
Thank you parents who helped spread their children’s LOVE and provided these images for us to post!! I know I’ll be re-watching this video over and over again!! I MISS MY STUDENTS SO MUCH!

I hope you enjoy your Mother’s Day with your family!! As part of language, I assigned 2 mother's day tasks this week for your child to complete. I hope you'll enjoy these notes of appreciation this weekend!
I would like to take this time now to also extend a very happy mother's day to my very own Ma! She is my personal hero whom I strive to be like each and everyday. She is the most selfless, supportive, and nurturing person I know.
The bond between a mother and her child is truly one of a kind! I admire, respect, and am inspired by all the mothers out there who consistently demonstrate and share their strength, dedication, and unconditional love for their children.
I am fortunate that I have been blessed to have a mother who has been the ultimate role model and who has been there for me always. Thank you Ma for all that you do, ALL THAT YOU ARE! I admire and love you!!
Additional Google Meet Opportunity:
Great news! I've decided to add an additional Google Meet for our distance learning! I just MISS MY STUDENTS TOO MUCH!
Right now, we are virtually meeting every Monday at 9:00 a.m. to kick off our week! It's been going well and I appreciate students participating!
Beginning next week, I would like to also offer AN OPTIONAL Google Meet on Fridays at 9:00 a.m. for those students who have something they'd like to share from their learning (e.g., a video of a STEAM activity they completed etc.).
I would like to keep it educationally based and discuss the work they're most proud of (1-2 pieces) and would like to share with their peers to help inspire them also! I think it's going to be GREAT!
I know I've been enjoying so many work pieces that are submitted by students / parents in the distance learning folders. Makes me smile cheek to cheek :-) and I want to celebrate this on Fridays!

Mental Health Week:
This week (May 4 - 10) is dedicated to Mental Health Week in Canada. Thank you to Mrs. Johnson for posting a link or activity for us to help restore, revive, and re-energize our mental health. Many of us (me included) may need gentle reminders to nourish this part of our bodies because “Everyone’s Mental Health Matters!” NOW MORE THAN EVER!
I hope your child was able to enjoy the activities that were shared throughout the week on our morning announcements. It's OK if you didn't get to it, I'll post some of those ideas now for you to perhaps try out over the weekend and into next week. Keep them in a safe place to access when and if you feel you need to :)
Where's Waldo?
Did your child get into this fun activity that was displayed on the Nottawa Announcements? I talked about this in our Google Meet on Monday and Mrs. Beattie sent out a link to families as well so students had an idea of this.
If you didn't do this optional activity earlier this week, no worries, you STILL HAVE TIME! Just something to keep US ALL connected, not just with our class, but our WHOLE SCHOOL.
Give it a try! We are asking students to get busy and colour in their Waldos and hang them on their windows or doors or somewhere where people can see them when they are walking or driving by!
You can look up Waldo colouring images and print one off! Or you can look up an image and draw and colour your own!
Try to get it up this week for people who will be enjoying nice family walks on the weekend! Please remember to always practice physical distancing! It is important to stay 2 metres apart.
Have fun looking for Waldo!

Mia:
Thank you Mia for emailing me these images of your amazing tree fort and the flowers from your hike! When I was a child, I always wanted a tree house like yours! However, I had to settle for something like this (see below). I'd just climb up into a tree, sit there (uncomfortably - HAHA) and look down. It was a simple pleasure, but one I enjoyed very much!
I bet your tree house is an excellent getaway for you and your siblings to relax in. I can totally picture Mia sitting in there cozily snuggled up with a good book! She loves to read, and her peers know that too :-)
Mindfulness:
Below you will find a CoronaVirus bedtime story. It is titled The Great Realisation.
In it, you’ll find a heartfelt message that makes one think about and realize why we say HINDSIGHT is 20/20.
Although this virus poses its challenges, if we open our hearts and minds lovingly, we will learn that this virus is teaching us all invaluable lessons which we can take forward with us to live healthier and not take the many luxuries we have for granted
ever again.
BE KIND ALWAYS. WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS TOGETHER.
Growth Mindset:
Namaste,
Ms. Gill
