Dear Families,
It's the last week of February already!?  It's a special one too because it's a LEAP YEAR!  Have you ever wondered Why Do We Have Leap Years?  If so, check out the link to discover why!

Character Recognition:
This month's character trait is Inclusiveness - "We always include others in our play, we never send people away."

I selected two students for this award, but could have easily picked numerous others as the children in my classroom have been working hard at being inclusive, most have schema (background knowledge) for not being included, so everyone is doing their personal best to ensure others feel welcome!

Congratulations to Sidney and Max for receiving the Inclusiveness award!  Well done you two!  I know your families will be so proud of you too just as much as I am :)

Pink Shirt Day:
Wednesday was dedicated to promoting and acknowledging Bullying Prevention!  This is an issue that is near and dear to my heart and as your child's teacher, I am reinforcing the importance of creating, building upon, and maintaining happy hearts in and out of our classroom.

Our Community of Learners Agreements (which are posted at the front of the class) help guide us every day - Attentive Listening, Mutual Respect, NO PUT DOWNS, Right to Participate, Right to Pass.

We regularly refer to these agreements as a reminder for us all to treat our peers, friends, and family with kindness, dignity, and respect.  I feel this will help in creating a happy, safe, and caring world.

I believe in all my students and their abilities to reach out to do their part in making a positive difference for our today and tomorrows ... together we can help put an END TO BULLYING!!!

Below I have posted a brief video about how pink shirt day got started.  This gave students an opportunity to learn where it all began and why it is important to acknowledge it every year!

Activity:  Happy to Scarred Hearts:
In our class, I shared an activity to help us create an awareness to the harmful effects of how deeply affected one can be when they are put down and bullied.  I drew a heart on a piece of paper.

Next, we observed the 'Heart' and talked about how it was feeling.  Many replied, “Happy, loved, respected.”

Then, I showed them a crumpled up paper and placed it in front of us.

Finally, we opened up the heart to see what it looked like.  Following this observation, we had a powerful discussion of how once you hurt someone's heart (feelings), you create "wrinkles or scars that remain with that person that are difficult to heal and bring back to its original happy state."

We also discussed the term "Bystander" and what it means.  A bystander(s) is a person or group of people who see bullying happening yet don't do anything to help.  In other words, they witness the bullying and walk away which ultimately continues and promotes this unkind cycle.  Listen to the story below to learn more.

My class is a beautiful, loving community of learners and it is our hope we will continue to be so and encourage each other as well as other students in our school about the importance of NO PUT DOWNS!

Language Activity:
I read aloud a story called "The Bully."  Check out Darcie holding it up!

Next week, students will work on using a Venn Diagram to sort and classify the similarities and differences between the main character of the text (the bully) to themselves.

They will also write a message to send to the bully (in the book) to help him turn around his negative actions to a positive one.

Due to the two snow days, we weren't able to get to these activities, but you will have the opportunity to see your child's work the following week as we'll require more class time.

CKNW Kids Fund Pink Shirt Day:
Bullying, cyber-bullying and harassment jeopardize learning and can severely impact a child’s mental, emotional and physical health.  The S.C.D.S.B encourages everyone to practice kindness today and every day! 💗

Raelynn & Joella:
Earlier in the week, these two sweet girls went to homework club to make me a special message because they know how passionate I am towards bullying prevention.  Thank you so much!!

Here at Nottawa, we are blessed to be surrounded with students who truly care about the well-being of others!

Parker:
On Wednesday, my former student Parker excitedly came to me after first fitness break to show me this (see picture below)!  He said, "Ms. Gill, I didn't have a pink shirt, but I decided to paint my nails pink to show my support for bullying prevention!"  I was so touched by this!

My class and I then had a wonderful discussion about how it doesn't matter if you're male or female, we can all express ourselves how we want as long as we're kind, caring, and compassionate towards others.

Thank you Parker for taking the time to share your passion for PINK SHIRT DAY with me!

Language:
This week, we learned about the magnificent Ruby Bridges!  She is an American civil rights activist. Ruby was the first African-American child to desegregate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis on November 14th 1960.

Check out the video below to learn more!

Thank you to Kali for signing out a book from the library about Ruby Bridges.  I shared the text in class, but I have also posted a video of it below if you wish to read it with your child in the cozy comforts of your home.

After listening to the story, students created visualizations of Ruby and what they believe she was thinking and saying to all the men and women who tried to put her down.  Check out some of the images below :)

Math:
Thank you to all families who have been supporting their child with the multi-step math word problems that came home this week.  It is really appreciated!  Students worked through 3 math tasks and I am pleased with their efforts to really understand, plan, solve, and explain their answers!!

We spent time at school as well to consolidate this learning as a whole class and with peers (small groups) to offer one another feedback to continue building upon our achievement.

In preparation for the multiplication and division assessment next week (Thursday), I sent home 5 math review word problems for your child to answer at his or her leisure.  If he or she wasn't at school today, they will receive it on Monday.  Please encourage them to use the 4-Block Method when solving these!

Max:
Thank you Max for taking the time to create a Brain Gym google slides presentation!  I know your peers were so intrigued by this when you shared it with the class.

Please know, I have shared it with Mrs. Kutcy's class as they embark on incorporating brain gym into their school day as well.  Your leadership is making a difference and is valued, Max!!

Coldest Night of the Year:
On Saturday, several Nottawa students and their families participated in this event to show their support towards Canadians across the country who are hungry, homeless, and hurting.

Kaitlyn Morin and her team set out a goal to raise $500.00, but exceeded this by 209% raising
$1, 047.00 - amazing!!  Thank you to ALL who donated!  Collingwood as a whole raised over $60,000 for the Home Horizon Organization.  What a remarkable achievement!!

Ivy & Sam:
Congratulations to Lou's older sister Ivy and Sam F. for their speech achievement!!  Check it out :)

Ivy came in 1st in the Lions public speaking competition!  She will move onto the next level on March 8th in Elmvale.

Sam F. came in 2nd in the Lions public speaking competition in Stayner!

Way to represent our Nottawa family so well in public speaking!!!  #nighthawkproud

Mindfulness:
I showed the video posted below in class during our health lesson so your child is familiar with it.  Ask:  What is Bullying?  What are some strategies you can use when faced with bullying / cyber-bullying?

The term bullying at times is loosely used, but it is important to know the difference between what is bullying and what is not.  In class, we had a good discussion about this and students have a clearer understanding of this.

Growth Mindset:
